Behavior Addictions/CO-Dependency
- Are you limiting your activities because of an addiction?
- Do you continue to use or act despite adverse consequences?
- Are you compulsively lying to family members to hide your addiction?
When we hear the word addiction we often think of drugs. However, addiction has many forms and can also include behavioral addictions. Behavior addictions can include: shopping, gambling, eating, compulsive internet use, compulsive sexual behaviors, and self-mutilation (or “cutting”). The other form of addiction is co-dependence. It is an addiction to overly focusing on another person and putting someone else’s needs above his or her own needs.
Change is possible. Many people have recovered and are recovering from co-dependence, substance, and behavioral addictions. Therapy can help actualize that change.
